Nonablative fractional laser resurfacing may provide an effective means of improving the appearance of severe burn scars, according to researchers..

Jill Waibel, M.D., of the Palm Beach Esthetic and Laser Center in Palm Beach, Fla., and colleagues tested the treatment in eight women and two men with second and third-degree burn scars. Patients ranged in age from 23 to 68 years. They received five treatments at four week intervals. Three independent blinded investigators evaluated clinical outcomes be examining photographs of treated areas taken three months after the final treatment and comparing them with pre treatment photographs.

Scoring by the blinded investigators showed overall improvement in all subjects, with 37% of post treatment photographs showing excellent improvement. All patients showed improvement in skin texture, with 63% of all post treatment photographs scored as showing at least moderate improvement. Most subjects experienced improvement in dyschromia and degree of atrophy or hypertrophy.

Fractional resurfacing most likely improves burn scars because of the unique wound created by the procedure, the subsequent healing cascade, and the depth of penetration, the researchers explained.
